The 2004 Annual Meeting was held at Central Michigan University.
The conference had record-breaking attendance, outstanding presentations and a very well-received keynote address by William Chambliss of the George Washington University.
CMU was a gracious host and contributed greatly to the success
of the meeting. Special thanks go to President Michael
Rao, who extended a personal welcome, as well as Nancy Herman-Kinney and David Kinney who served as on-site
coordinators. The CMU Department of Sociology, Anthropology
and Social Work under the leadership of Mary Senter went out of its way
to encourage attendance and support the meeting. Gary Shapiro, Dean of the
College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, was also very
helpful to us. All those at CMU who contributed to the
success of this meeting - including the student workers - are too
numerous to list. But we are grateful to you all. Many
thanks!
AWARDS:
Nancy Herman-Kinney of CMU received the
Charles H. Cooley Award for distinguished
scholarship. Her work in symbolic interactionism was
singled out for special praise.
Michele Whitaker, chair of the Criminal Justice Department at Delta College, was given the Marvin Olsen Award for outstanding service to sociology in Michigan. She was cited for integrating the sociological perspective into the training of law enforcement and corrections officers and for fostering interdisciplinary cooperation between sociology and criminal justice. It was the first time a criminal justice professor has received this award.
A special citation was given to Patrick
Easto of Eastern
Michigan University for a distinguished career as a Michigan
sociologist. Professor Easto was one of the early
leaders of the Michigan
Sociological Association.
