MSA ESTABLISHES REYNOLDS TEACHING AWARD
The MSA voted to establish an award for "outstanding teaching of
sociology" at its Fall meeting, October 7, 2006. The award was
named after Larry T. Reynolds, emeritus professor of sociology, Central
Michigan University.
This marks the first time an MSA award has been named for a living person.
The recipient of the first Reynolds teaching award was,
appropriately enough, Larry Reynolds. In discussing this unique
honor, it was pointed out that Larry Reynolds has been a mentor and
inspirational teacher to generations of sociology students.
Michele Whitaker, chair of the Criminal Justice program at Delta
College and herself an Olsen Award winner, commented that without Larry
Reynolds' guidance she would never have completed her graduate studies,
let alone achieved the success she has. No one who ever
sat in Reynolds' classroom will forget his impassioned lectures,
fascinating stories and strong commitment to social justice.
