Tesla Coil Base
A schematic view of my Tesla coil base, from
the top, showing the location of the primary, primary mounts, strike rail
and the secondary base plate.
A picture of the base, with the secondary form,
before the primary or the secondary support were installed. The
base is made from two 24" square by 3/4" thick high density polyethylene
cutting boards separated by four 13" X 2" polycarbonate tubes at the outer
corners. The structure is held together with 1/2"-13 threaded PVC rods
at the corners and the same size fiberglass rods near the center. A 9"
X 9" X 1/4" polycarbonate sheet (not shown here) rides on the inner rods
to form an adjustable mount for the secondary. The secondary form (unwound
in this picture) is a 32" section of 8" OD polycarbonate tubing. The base
sits on four Delrin swivel feet. Also visible are the four UHMWPE mounting
rails for the primary.
This schematic shows the details of the secondary mount, including
the 9" X 9" X 1/4" polycarbonate base plate, which rides vertically on
the four inner fiberglass threaded rods. The secondary form is sealed top
and bottom with silicone foam rubber pads, held in compression by nylon
nuts on the central fiberglass threaded rod. This rod also supports two
aluminum tape covered plywood disks which hold the toroid. The four outer
PVC threaded rods clamp the two large polyethylene sheets to the four polycarbonate
tubes and also hold four UHMWPE mounts for the strike rail.
